BURLINGTON NORTHERN RAILROAD

BN Timetables

Phase 0 are the timetables issued May 10 1968, the original merger date that was stayed by court order. It contains timetables issued for the CB&Q, GN, NP, & SPS territory in divisional format, but not including the Colorado & Southern and Fort Worth & Denver territory, as these railroads remained separate corporate entities. Special instructions were issued as separate publications. These timetables are from Dean Ogle's collection, scanned by Dean.
Phase 1 are the timetables that were issued on Mar 03, 1970. It contains timetables issued for the CB&Q, GN, NP, & SPS territory in divisional format, but not including the Colorado & Southern and Fort Worth & Denver territory, as these railroads remained separate corporate entities. Special instructions were issued as separate publications.
Phase 2 are timetables published after the initial Mar 3, 1970 issue in regional format. These include the Chicago, Twin Cities, Billings, Omaha-Denver, Portland, Seattle, Portland-Seattle and Seattle-Portland. Special instructions were issued as separate publications. C&S and FW&D still remained separate corporate entities.
Phase 3 are timetables issued beginning 10/31/82 or 04/24/83. They represented the final regional format in effect in 1982, but now had the special instructions incorporated into the same publication. They contained common special instructions usually placed at the front of the timetable. Rarities include two Ft Worth Region timetables that covered the Ft Worth Division only. This was consolidated into the Denver Region Oct 30, 1983.
Phase 4 represents the divisional re-organization that occurred October 20, 1988. Among some of the differences were BN Green color front and back covers and a colored signal page 2 of timetables issued after #1.
Phase 5 represents an attempt at paper publication reduction by creating 3 corridors, Northern, Central and Southern. They were issued Jan 1, 1993 and were a one time issue.
Phase 6 represents the introduction of the looseleafs in a binder format. It potentially allowed correction of individual pages, however it appears that rather than replace pages BN management simply issued a new set of system looseleafs three times before BNSF merger.

Dean Ogle has also scanned several CMStP&P / BN joint timetables covering the trackage operated jointly between St. Croix Tower and Division Street in Minnesota. Click here for the set.

BNSF Timetables

Phase 1 are the first timetables issued after the merger of BN and ATSF. Although the merger took place in late 1995, BNSF timetables were not issued until August 1, 1996. Timetables are 5.5" x 8.5", seven-hole punched and looseleaf.
Phase 2 were issued in response to a divisional reorganization. Documents were 8.5" x 11", 3-hole punched and saddle-stitched.
Phase 3 were issued beginning in Spring 1999 and marked a change in BNSF distribution policy. Distribution of actual printed copies of each timetable were restricted to employees working on that division. Timetables for other divisions were available only by downloading them from the company's internet site. Timetables continued at 8.5" x 11" but were again looseleaf.
Phase 4 were issued in response to a division reorganization in late 2001. Twenty-two divisions were consolidated into thirteen. Then-current timetables remained in effect until new timetables were issued with a January 20, 2002 effective date.
